Have you ever thought about the factors that shaped your life and helped make you
what you are?
I concluded that my most formative years were probably the first 11 years of my life.
During these years, the town of Emsworth and its social infrastructure had a major
influence on the lives of myself and my family.
I decided to write down a few of my recollections of those times and prepared a short
piece of ‘free verse’ which I called, ‘Where are you from?’
The idea was to pass on my memories of life in Emsworth in a brief ‘book’ to my
children, grandchildren and anyone who might be interested. I subsequently received
some encouragement to extend the piece and prepare it in exhibition form.
So, I set about preparing the wall boards and objects on display in this room.
My fondness for Emsworth was a constant reminder that I should ensure the content
reflected the influence of the town on my life and not make the work all about me.
I hope I have come up with a reasonable balance?
My thanks go to the Emsworth Maritime and Historical Trust for giving me the
opportunity to display the exhibit and to my granddaughter Erin Ballard who was of
great assistance in the preparation and printing of the display boards.
‘Where are you from?’ offers an introduction to the exhibition while the remaining
boards attempt to paint a more detailed picture of life and influences up until I was
about 10-11 years of age.
Maybe you have recollections of your childhood in Emsworth? If so, please feel free
to add anything you can call to mind to the dedicated visitors book in this room.
