Lacock Abbey, the Fox Talbot Museum, Hereford and the Mappa Mundi, the Forest of Dean and Basildon Park
A four day, end of summer, break in Gloucestershire with an interest packed programme of coach excursions and visits, staying at a four star hotel in association with Woods Travel.

Bowden Hall Hotel (4 star) is a Georgian country house hotel set in 12 acres of parkland in the Cotswolds. All bedrooms have TV, telephone, free Wi-fi, hairdryer and hospitality tray.
Day 1.Departing Emsworth at 08:30am we travel to Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire (National Trust) where we arrive in time for lunch. At Lacock we can visit the Abbey rooms, the Fox Talbot Museum of photography the stables, and the village. The Abbey was formerly a nunnery but latterly the home of William Henry Fox Talbot who pioneered photography in the 1830s., We arrive at the hotel late in the afternoon.
Day 2. After.breakfast we travel to Hereford, an historic city and county town of Herefordshire, founded in the 7th century. Here we have a walking tour which is followed by lunch and time to visit the Cathedral and the Mappa Mundi. Later in the afternoon we return to the hotel via Symonds Yat, a noted beauty spot and photo-opportunity overlooking the valley of the River Wye.
Day 3. Today we get an insight into the beauty and industrial archaeology of the Forest of Dean. Leaving the hotel we drive to Coleford for an underground guided tour of the Clearwell Caves, a brightly lit lofty series of caverns going back some 4500 years for the mining of iron and ochre. There will be time for lunch followed by a visit to the Dean Forest Railway, and then to the Dean Heritage Centre (coalmining and folk history) before returning to the hotel.
Day 4. Leaving after breakfast we make our way to Basildon Park In Berkshire (National Trust). This1750s Palladian building was requisitioned during the war before becoming a home to Lady Iliffe in the 1950s. She lovingly restored the gardens and became a host to lavish parties.. There are impressive Old Masters, 20th century engravings and paintings of the Grand Tour. We arrive at back at Emsworth about 6:30pm.

Insurance is necessary but can be arranged by Woods for £20 pp. *Single supplement £50.
