Sugar, Slaves, Ships and Some Speculation. by Rodney Stone
We turn the clock back some 180 years to discover how a Hampshire gentleman helped Mauritius, both practically and financially, to cope with the challenges it had to face following the abolition of slavery. There are so many valid accounts of gross ill-treatment of slaves that took place up to then, it’s worth looking at some examples of the efforts that were made to reverse that situation, at a time when not everyone agreed with the process. We will also have the chance to see what it was like to live on that distant island in the first half of the 19th Century.
All talks begin at 7.30pm in Emsworth Community Centre, North Street, Emsworth. Doors open 7pm.
