Growing Up in Emsworth in the 1940s and 1950s

Saturday 1st September   to Sunday  30th September

Have you ever thought about the factors that shaped your life and helped make you what you are? I concluded that my most formative years were probably the first 11 years of my life. During these years, the town of Emsworth and its social infrastructure had a major influence on the lives of myself and my family. I decided to write down a few of my recollections of those times and prepared a short piece of ‘free verse’ which I called, ‘Where are you from?’ The idea was to pass on my memories of life in Emsworth in a brief ‘book’ to my children, grandchildren and anyone who might be interested. I subsequently received some encouragement to extend the piece and prepare it in exhibition form for Emsworth Museum.

The resulting display at the Museum is a collection of personal memories, images and memorabilia to depict what life was like for a child growing up in the post war years. ‘Where are you from?’ offers an introduction to the exhibition while the remaining boards and memorabilia attempt to paint a more detailed picture of life and influences of the town up until I was about 10-11 years of age.
