Saturday, 17th June was a great day for Emsworth Footballers. At last there was a temporary exhibition in the Rudkin Room just for them. Steve Miller, with local community help, had mounted an excellent exhibition which was opened by Ray Crawford, ex-Pompey and England centre-forward. Ray was welcomed by Vice-chairman, Margaret Rogers and in company with Steve and Phil Magrath, Museum curator, toured the exhibits. All were impressed by the collection of memorabilia on show. These included pictures from Steve’s own collection and from museum archives of football teams from local clubs, schools and organisations from the period 1900 to the early 1960s.
Amusing extracts from The Emsworthian, newspaper reports of scores and scorers, the progress of the Emsworth youth club football league players from the Lads League to men’s football in the Portsmouth League; all are documented.
Ray knows all about goal scoring. In 482 league appearances he scored an incredible total of 290 goals.
The exhibition is open at weekends until 9th July, admission free. Opening times are Saturday, 10.30 am to 4.30 pm and Sunday, 2.30 to 4.30 pm.
