Brick Making in Emsworth
Before the widespread use of the internal combustion engine brick making was a localised activity. Seams of clay suitable for making bricks run through Emsworth, Rowlands Castle and Hayling Island and they have been exploited since the Roman period. Often brick making was seasonal and incorporated into the annual farming cycle. This exhibition explains the traditional brick making process using photographs from the Pycroft brick making business on Hayling Island. The source of the bricks used to construct the Museum building is identified.

The Emsworth Museum collection includes items ranging from the Stone Age until the present. This exhibit provides a taste of that range including a 13th century Edward 1st silver penny, letters from PG Wodehouse to Lillian Bernett and Pub signs from Emworth pubs that closed in this century. The Story of a Ship
This is an on-line verison of the exhibition held at Emsworth Museum in 2022 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War.
It is based mainly on HMS Antrim, a Portsmouth manned guided missile destroyer, which re-took South Georgia and then spearheaded the landings in San Carlos Water. Here she “collected” an unexploded 500lb bomb which passed through her main missile magazine.
Each of the panels shown in the exhibition can be viewed, together with more detailed information.

Not only did PG Wodehouse live in Emsworth and number of the characters in his books are associated with the town. Take a look at this online exhibition and then vist the museum to see the PG Wodehouse exhibits on show.

Pycroft's Brickyard
The information in the short exhibition has been taken from one of the very many folders sitting on the shelves of Emsworth Museum. At the heart of the folder are photographs taken by a Mr. J.P. Cole. Mr Cole donated the photographs to the museum in 1995 not long after the last bricks were produced in the summer of 1990. The collection of photographs were entitled "The Workings of a Brickworks at Hayling Island" and each of the photgraphs annotated to show the progress through a season of brickmaking
