SUMMARY:Talk - Violette Szabo GC
DESCRIPTION:Jeremy Prescott will present this inspirational story of the bravery of Violette Szabo\, one of the immensely brave Special Operations Executive agents who were parachuted into France during the Second World War. It covers her brief marriage to Etienne Szabo\, a French Legionnaire\, before he was killed in El Alamein. It covers her motivation to be selected by the SOE\, the training involved\, her 2 missions into France\, her capture by the Germans\, her imprisonment and execution in Ravensbruck concentration camp in 1945\, the award of the George Cross gallantry medal to her 4 year old daughter Tania and how her memory is now commemorated. \n\n\n\nViolette’s husband fought with the Free French in Africa\, participating the defence of the Bir Hakeim Oasis – now in Libya. The Emsworth Free French camp was named Bir Hakeim as a tribute to this important action. See the display in Emsworth Museum for further information. \n\n\n\n\n\nViolette Szabo c.1944

SUMMARY:Talk - Different perspectives upon the 1830 Swing Riots in Emsworth and Havant
DESCRIPTION:Neil Spurgeon will talk about the 1830 swing riots following our recent exhibition on the subject. This is the story of a riot\, of destruction and defiance\, when a number of threshing machines in the immediate area were destroyed. \n\n\n\nResearch into the events that happened at the time reveals that the farm workers faced a perfect storm created by the death of King George IV. After the end of the wars with France\, and as an unintended consequence of the Poor Laws\, the Corn Laws and a flood of workers from the military\, farm workers were inflamed by draconian punishment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - From London to The Sea – The Final Leg
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition for Emsworth Museum opens on Friday 29 August and focuses on some of the local elements of the huge engineering project that is now firmly a part of local legend.  In 1823\, The Portsmouth to Arundel Navigation was opened to great applause – thanks to British engineering and finance\, Portsmouth was now joined to London via a new waterway that would make the investors wealthy and the delivery of goods to the Royal Navy at Portsmouth\, much faster and cheaper.  Did it happen?  Well of course it didn’t. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition takes a brief look at some of the local investors including William Padwick of Warblington House\, Viscount Keith of Purbrook House and the 3rd Earl of Egremont of Petworth House.  We look at changes to the local landscape that the project brought to Portsea Island and Cosham and of course\, the construction of the first proper bridge between Haying Island and Langstone.  The exhibition offers possible reasons for the failure of the canal and looks at how we were saved from some of the future plans and projects dreamed up by some of the investors and interested parties\, all in the name of progress. \n\n\n\n\n\nPortsmouth and Arundel Navigation Emblem\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom London to the Sea – The Final Leg is supported by an illustrated talk at the Emsworth Community Centre on Thursday 18 September at 7:30pm by Nigel Gossop\, entitled The Rise and Fall of the Portsmouth to Arundel Navigation.  Tickets are £5.00 each and are available from Bookends\, High Street\, Emsworth from Friday 1 August.   \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is open: \n\n\n\nFridays 10:30am to 4:30pm (August only) \n\n\n\nSaturdays and Bank Holidays 10:30am to 4:30pm \n\n\n\nSundays 1:30pm to 4:30pm

SUMMARY:The Annual Treasure Hunt is alive!
DESCRIPTION:This year the walking treasure trail will occur on Wednesday evening\, 18 June. It is planned to start about 6.30-7.00pm in the Friends Garden\, 50 meters south of the museum where it will finish\, weather permitting. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe more adventurous route will be through the recreation ground\, along Belle Vue Road and northeast to Westbourne. The return will follow the river from Westbourne\, past the alpaca field\, over the A27 bridge\, passing Lumley Mill and along Lumley Lane\, through Brook Meadow and back to the Museum. \n\n\n\nPlease note that Lumley Lane can be very muddy and has puddles so walking boots (or wellies?) are advised and probably essential. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTeams of adults\, families and youth groups are all welcome.  Adults are asked to donate £5 each\, Children £1 (voluntarily). \n\n\n\nThere will be prizes and the winners will NOT be asked to compile next year’s route and questions (unless they wish to do so). \n\n\n\nIt takes a lot of work to organise the route and questions so please support this community event.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Emsworth Yacht Harbour at 60
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition will run from April 5th until April 21st and then from May 10th until May 26th. \n\n\n\nNote our opening times: \n\n\n\n\nSaturdays\, Bank Hols 10.30 am – 4.30 pm.\n\n\n\nSundays 1.30 pm – 4.30 pm.\n\n\n\nFridays in August 10.30 am – 4.30 pm.\n\n\n\n\nEmsworth Yacht Harbour is celebrating 60 years of operation from its foundation in 1965. The marina is nestled in the east of Emsworth’s natural harbour and has played an important part of the history which has shaped Emsworth to this day. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will show how the Yacht Harbour was constructed with the vision of the remarkable Admiral Gick who loved Emsworth and saw the potential of the site after many other industries had left. The dedication\, effort and hard work of Admiral Gick created Emsworth Yacht Harbour and was run by the Admiral after his retirement for many years. Before handing the reins over to the Wakelin family who had a long-term vision to develop the site and to support many marine trades making Emsworth Yacht Harbour a one stop shop for boat owners with many services on site. \n\n\n\nExamples of plans\, drawings and photographs will showcase the development of the marina and how it has remained a unique place not just for boatowners but also the local community. We look forward to welcoming you to the exhibition in the museum from March to May. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdmiral Gick

SUMMARY:Talk - Portsmouth Part III 1850 to 1930
DESCRIPTION:Andrew picks up the history in 1850 when billions of pounds were being spent to protect the navy and the dockyard was the largest factory complex in the world\, employing over 4\,000 people. The town was dangerous and filthy but over the next thirty years became healthier and wealthier\, in general\, though there continued to be poverty and squalor throughout the period covered by the talk. \n\n\n\nA number of factors influenced changes in the 1860’s and 70’s: – HMS Warrior\, the first iron hulled\, armoured battleship powered by steam and sail\, was too large for the existing dockyard and part of the harbour was reclaimed to extend the site. One of the first sewage systems in the country was built at Eastney\, removing the dung from the streets. Corset factories provided employment for the wives of sailors and dockyard workers. HMS Vernon\, the Royal Navy’s Torpedo School and HMS Excellent\, the first on land gunnery school\, were established. The Quarterdeck Block on Whale Island\, home to HMS Excellent\, is now a small museum housing artefacts from the school including the gun carriage which is always maintained in readiness for use in state funerals. Dame Agnes Weston opened the Sailors’ Rest and Sarah Robinson the Soldiers’ Welcome\, providing clean\, safe accommodation and entertainment away from alcohol. The Grammar School was re-founded. Hospitals\, hotels and theatres were built. \n\n\n\n\n\nTowards the end of the nineteenth century the first turbine power station and the Guildhall were built and Portsmouth Football Club was established\, with Arthur Conan Doyle as one of the founding members. \n\n\n\nAs would be expected\, Portsmouth made a significant contribution to WW1 – building ships\, supplying sailors and soldiers\, including 3 Pals Battalions from the area. \n\n\n\nIn 1926 Portsmouth became a city and the parish church of St Thomas of Canterbury became the cathedral of the new Diocese of Portsmouth\, created when the Diocese of Winchester was split into three. \n\n\n\nThe talk ended in 1930 with recession\, the population of Portsmouth outgrowing the space within the walls\, unemployment as no ships were being built and more poverty. This set the scene for the sequel of what is now a quartet. \n\n\n\n\n\nAndrew Negus\, retired history teacher and Blue Badge guide for central southern England

SUMMARY:Talk - P. G. Wodehouse and the Men of Tost
DESCRIPTION:This is the results of a two-year project investigating the time British author PG Wodehouse spent at the Nazi Internment Camp at Tost (now Toszek) in Silesia; it evaluates his own writing on the topic alongside the memoirs\, letters and reminiscences of other former inmates in order to compile a compelling story of this civilian internment camp in order to fill a gap in existing research \n\n\n\n\n\nChristine has been working at the University of Portsmouth since August 2009\, first as Senior Lecturer in English Literature and\, since 2019\, as Reader in Literature. Over the past years she has held a number of additional admin roles\, most recently that of Global Engagement Lead for the School of Area Studies\, History\, Politics and Literature (January 2018 to December 2021).  She is now Associate Head of School for Global Engagement. Before Christine came to Portsmouth\, she held a seven-year Lectureship in 19th and 20th Century Literature at the University of Derby. This partly overlapped her PhD research on the Image of the English Gentleman in 20th Century Literature which was conducted at the University of York. Before that she completed an MA in English Literature\, Spanish and Latinamerican Language and Literature\, and Modern History at the University of the Saarland in Germany. \n\n\n\n\n\nDr Christine Berberish – Associate Head (Global Engagement)\, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences\, School of Area Studies\, Sociology\, History\, Politics and Literature

SUMMARY:Talk - “Cross-Dressed to Kill”
DESCRIPTION:By Vivien Morgan \n\n\n\nVivien Morgan\nformer TV News Journalist and Documentary Producer\, who picked up a camera to become a TV Video journalist pioneer\n\n\n\n‘Cross-dressed to Kill’ is a book featuring a unique collection of extraordinary stories by twenty women cross-dressers of English\, Irish\, French\, Prussian\, Russian\, Spanish\, American and Israeli nationalities.  There were literally hundreds of known women cross-dressers in Britain across Europe and in the Americas yet they have been erased from both social and military history. \n\n\n\nThe bravery of these women masquerading as men and the risks they took were great. The penalty for cross-dressing in this period was harsh\, including the death penalty because it was seen as an unnatural act that threatened society and offended social morality. \n\n\n\nThe talk answers all the questions of why young women dressed as men to fight as soldiers in the 17th to 20th centuries?    Vivien will tell some of these fascinating women’s stories: fearless\, ‘tomboys’\, early feminists and decidedly full of what was called ‘pluck and spunk’. For them ‘patriotism had no sex’\, determined to fight for their country. What did society think of them? Why was cross-dressing illegal and punishable by death?  Were some lesbian or transsexual- as we debate gender today? What happened to them after they were discovered\, their sex revealed while dying on the battlefield or wounded? Answers to these questions and how\, unafraid to kill\, their bravery was rewarded by the army and royalty.  Medals\, money and fame came. Their legacy? Some are hailed as the first female sailors and soldiers like Deborah Sampson and Lucy Brewer. As the late author Hilary Mantel wrote ’their story is our story’\, to be included in the re-telling past events. \n\n\n\nAll tickets are for sale only at £5.00 each at Bookends of Emsworth\, 7 High Street. Cash only.

SUMMARY:Talk - "Lost Ship - Found"
DESCRIPTION:By Dr Ian Friel \n\n\n\nDr Ian Friel\nMaritime Historian\n\n\n\nThe talk is about some of the shipwrecks Ian researched as a historian – an English ship from the 1400s\, a Dutch vessel from the 1600s\, and a British passenger liner from the 1850s. The last of the three remains lost\, and its story has odd resonances with that of the Titanic\, nearly 60 years later. With a lifetime’s enthusiasm for history and archaeology\, Ian is committed to helping people appreciate how important it is to understand the past as a way of understanding the world. He has many years of research and writing experience\, and a specialist knowledge of maritime history that ranges from the Middle Ages to modern times. \n\n\n\nAll tickets are for sale only at £5.00 each at Bookends of Emsworth\, 7 High Street. Cash only.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Emsworth Fire Brigade
DESCRIPTION:The Museum occupies the offices and council chamber of the Warblington Urban District Council\, built in 1900 before the council merged with Havant and Waterlooville.    At the time\, the council was responsible for the fire brigade which was manned by volunteers drawn from the local community.     The fire station was included on the ground floor of the building.   It has operated from there ever since. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition traces the history of the fire brigade from these early beginnings up to the present day. \n\n\n\nEmsworth fire station has been in continuous use for more than 120 years and must now be one of the oldest in the country. \n\n\n\nUsing pictures of early equipment and uniforms this exhibition will trace the history of the Emsworth Fire Brigade from about 1885 when the fire engine was horse drawn and hand pumped. An appliance such as this was used to fight the Stansted House fire in July 1900 and from pictures of the event it appears that uniforms had changed very little since the mid 1800s. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday 31st August\, in conjunction with the exhibition in Emsworth Museum\, the Emsworth Fire Station will hold an open day with fire engines old and new on display in the car park alongside the Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\n1901 The horse drawn steam pumped Shand Mason fire engine practising a Lumley Mill.\n\n\n\nEmsworth fire brigade just before WWII with the Merryweather self-propelled fire engine that replaced the Shand Mason.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:A soldier from 101st Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment prepares for D Day by reading his French handbook at Camp A2 Emsworth\, 29 May 1944. Photographed by Captain J L Evans. Copyright Imperial War Museum.\n\n\n\n\n\nJune 6th\, 2024\, will see the 80th anniversary of D-Day\, the allied landing on the Normandy beaches. The Museum will be commemorating the event with an exhibition reflecting the lead up to D-Day and the impact on the local area and people connected to Emsworth. \n\n\n\nIt is hard to comprehend the complexity of planning an event of this magnitude\, co-ordinating resources from multiple nations\, whilst maintaining absolute secrecy. In Emsworth alone\, in the weeks leading up to the landings there were Canadian\, Free French and British troops all camped in the surrounding woods\, and movement of the local population was strictly controlled with checkpoints to pass in and out of the area. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe landing sites needed to be surveyed and mapped\, a role undertaken by the COPPs who operated out of Hayling Sailing Club; the troops needed to be trained for the landing; local shipyards were building and repairing landing craft etc.; and local people were busy in various roles\, including making camouflage netting in the church hall. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will also look at the engineering feats such as the Mulberry Harbours (the remains of one can still be seen in Langstone harbour)\, ”Pluto” (Pipeline Under the Ocean) and the Hobart Funnies. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition includes material from Emsworth residents who participated in the landings\, some dating back to 2014 when we covered the 70th Anniversary in an exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n76th (Highland) Field Regiment RA preparing “Priests” for action in Emsworth
