SUMMARY:Talk - "Lost Ship - Found"
DESCRIPTION:By Dr Ian Friel \n\n\n\nDr Ian Friel\nMaritime Historian\n\n\n\nThe talk is about some of the shipwrecks Ian researched as a historian – an English ship from the 1400s\, a Dutch vessel from the 1600s\, and a British passenger liner from the 1850s. The last of the three remains lost\, and its story has odd resonances with that of the Titanic\, nearly 60 years later. With a lifetime’s enthusiasm for history and archaeology\, Ian is committed to helping people appreciate how important it is to understand the past as a way of understanding the world. He has many years of research and writing experience\, and a specialist knowledge of maritime history that ranges from the Middle Ages to modern times. \n\n\n\nAll tickets are for sale only at £5.00 each at Bookends of Emsworth\, 7 High Street. Cash only.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Emsworth Fire Brigade
DESCRIPTION:The Museum occupies the offices and council chamber of the Warblington Urban District Council\, built in 1900 before the council merged with Havant and Waterlooville.    At the time\, the council was responsible for the fire brigade which was manned by volunteers drawn from the local community.     The fire station was included on the ground floor of the building.   It has operated from there ever since. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition traces the history of the fire brigade from these early beginnings up to the present day. \n\n\n\nEmsworth fire station has been in continuous use for more than 120 years and must now be one of the oldest in the country. \n\n\n\nUsing pictures of early equipment and uniforms this exhibition will trace the history of the Emsworth Fire Brigade from about 1885 when the fire engine was horse drawn and hand pumped. An appliance such as this was used to fight the Stansted House fire in July 1900 and from pictures of the event it appears that uniforms had changed very little since the mid 1800s. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday 31st August\, in conjunction with the exhibition in Emsworth Museum\, the Emsworth Fire Station will hold an open day with fire engines old and new on display in the car park alongside the Museum. \n\n\n\n\n\n1901 The horse drawn steam pumped Shand Mason fire engine practising a Lumley Mill.\n\n\n\nEmsworth fire brigade just before WWII with the Merryweather self-propelled fire engine that replaced the Shand Mason.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - 80th Anniversary of D-Day
DESCRIPTION:A soldier from 101st Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment prepares for D Day by reading his French handbook at Camp A2 Emsworth\, 29 May 1944. Photographed by Captain J L Evans. Copyright Imperial War Museum.\n\n\n\n\n\nJune 6th\, 2024\, will see the 80th anniversary of D-Day\, the allied landing on the Normandy beaches. The Museum will be commemorating the event with an exhibition reflecting the lead up to D-Day and the impact on the local area and people connected to Emsworth. \n\n\n\nIt is hard to comprehend the complexity of planning an event of this magnitude\, co-ordinating resources from multiple nations\, whilst maintaining absolute secrecy. In Emsworth alone\, in the weeks leading up to the landings there were Canadian\, Free French and British troops all camped in the surrounding woods\, and movement of the local population was strictly controlled with checkpoints to pass in and out of the area. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe landing sites needed to be surveyed and mapped\, a role undertaken by the COPPs who operated out of Hayling Sailing Club; the troops needed to be trained for the landing; local shipyards were building and repairing landing craft etc.; and local people were busy in various roles\, including making camouflage netting in the church hall. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will also look at the engineering feats such as the Mulberry Harbours (the remains of one can still be seen in Langstone harbour)\, ”Pluto” (Pipeline Under the Ocean) and the Hobart Funnies. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition includes material from Emsworth residents who participated in the landings\, some dating back to 2014 when we covered the 70th Anniversary in an exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\n76th (Highland) Field Regiment RA preparing “Priests” for action in Emsworth

SUMMARY:Exhibition - 100 Years of Faithful Service
DESCRIPTION:Two Churches – One Parish\n\n\n\nWhat was life like in Emsworth a hundred years ago ? \n\n\n\nThe “100 Years of Faithful Service” exhibition commemorates the centenary of two parishes uniting. \n\n\n\nIt features photographs\, documents and artefacts relating to people\, events and buildings in Warblington and Emsworth over the last century. \n\n\n\nLearn about the parishes and rectors of 1924. Discover some of the history of the area from a timeline\, historic maps\, documentation and images. Reminisce on past events and people in the churches and observe how active they are today. Reflect on the differences and similarities between 1924 and 2024. \n\n\n\nThere will also be panels displaying photographs of Emsworth in the 1920s.  Some old photographs will show remarkable similarities. Others may be of localities now unrecognisable.  Old maps will be on display too.  There will be a timeline which features mainly local events and visits of well-known personalities. \n\n\n\nA folder of memories of baptisms and weddings will be on display.  Some of the mysterious workings of the Church of England will be revealed. \n\n\n\nOur aim is to present a snapshot of local life a hundred years ago\, reveal how it has changed and show what is happening now in our historic churches.” \n\n\n\nAn exhibition led by Gordon Braddock \n\n\n\n\n\nSt James Church\, Emsworth. Tinted postcard dating from about 1924.\n\n\n\nOil painting of Warblington Church by Wickham-Smith\, in the Emsworth Museum collection EMHT1148

SUMMARY:Talk - Barmy in Wonderland – When the Cheshire Cat met the Newt.
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sarah Stanfield \n\n\n\nLewis Carroll was a paradigm shifter in Victorian Children’s literature\, who excited the imaginations of his young readers\, and none more so than one Pelham Greville Wodehouse.   Unexpected links between the two authors began to emerge on close examination of their lives and literary output. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSarah Stanfield Sarah was born on Hayling Island but has lived most of her adult life in Kent.  From an early age she was captivated by the works of Lewis Carroll – initially his poetry\, then the Alice novels and other works of nonsense fiction.  Encouraged by a librarian friend she began collecting editions of the author’s work and to join the Lewis Carroll Society.  She began to attend their London meetings as an adult\, later joined the Society’s Committee\, eventually becoming Chairman.  Lately\, she has become interested in the influence that Lewis Carroll has had upon other authors\, most recently Douglas Adams\, and has now turned her attention to another of her literary heroes\, the wonderful P. G. Wodehouse. On close examination of the lives and literary output of Lewis Carroll and Wodehouse Sarah found unexpected links between them. Her article on the Wodehouse poem Avenged! was published in The Emsworth Echo last November. \n\n\n\nTickets: You must book a ticket in advance to be sure of entry. SUMMARY:Talk - The CT Scanner: The Beatles greatest gift to mankind?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Ben Timmis \n\n\n\nAlthough we take modern medical technology for granted\, the CT Scanner\, invented by an Englishman\, is a truly extraordinary machine\, that has had a huge impact on the practice of medicine as we know it today\, ever since it was introduced in the 1980s. This talk will explain the origins of its invention\, how it works\, the impact it has made\, and what on earth The Beatles had to do with it. \n\n\n\nDr. Ben Timmis \n\n\n\nDr. Ben Timmis is a consultant radiologist who was trained at The Hammersmith and Royal Free hospitals and spent his consultant life at The Whittington Hospital in north London\, where he was both Director of Imaging and also the first Medical Director of the Whittington NHS Trust. He oversaw the instillation of the first CT and MRI scanners at the hospital. SUMMARY:Talk - The Mystery of the Haberdasher’s Scissors
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Alison Habens and Matt Wingett \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWriters and researchers\, Alison Habens and Matt Wingett\, claim to have discovered an extraordinary fact: three famous literary figures of the 19th Century\, H.G.Wells\, Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling met each other in the early 1880s\, in the Old Drapery Bazaar\, Hide’s Emporium\, on King’s Road in Southsea. Even more amazing\, they were involved in a dark mystery that might have come straight from one of their own stories. Hear it unfold\, through a series of extracts from their autobiographies\, solve a few clues yourself – and work out where the boundary between true history and pure invention sits. \n\n\n\nAlison Habens \n\n\n\nAlison is best known for her novels Dreamhouse\, Lifestory and The True Picture.  She is a lecturer in creative writing at the University of Portsmouth and leads the Portsmouth Writers Hub; a community interest company that brings University writers and writing groups together. \n\n\n\nMatt Wingett \n\n\n\nMatt Wingett is the publisher\, editor\, designer\, local historian rare book dealer and general dog’s body of Life Is Amazing\, dedicated to publishing books.  He has always been interested in writing\, having started his first story when he was six years old. At various times since then\, he has looked back\, wondered what the hell he was doing spending so much time writing instead of having a life\, given up\, taught English in Egypt\, came back again\, ran a computer company and a successful rare book dealership – and finally thrown up his hands in defeat and said: “I give up! I can’t help writing\, so I’ll have to just get on with it.” \n\n\n\nTickets: You must book a ticket in advance to be sure of entry. Tickets are available for £5 each only from Bookends\, 7 High Street\, Emsworth\, PO10 7AQ. Seats are unreserved.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Ripping Yarns and the Tale of the Forgotten Author – The Story of Percy F. Westerman
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition charting the life and works of Percy F. Westerman\, one of Britain’s most prolific writers of children’s adventure books is coming to Emsworth Museum.  The exhibition\, which opens on September 2nd\, 2023\, includes books and ephemera from the Westerman Yarns Collection\, belonging to Nigel Gossop who has been collecting and researching the books and life of the Portsmouth born author for more than thirty years.  \n\n\n\nPercy F. Westerman knew Emsworth well; for many years he was a familiar sight out on the water\, participating in various sailing regattas and events.  Before he embarked on his career as a writer of books for children\, he wrote extensively of his sailing experiences for the popular yachting press and in 1905 was a founder member of the Fareham Sailing Club. \n\n\n\nThe Ripping Yarns: and the Tale of the Forgotten Author exhibition was last shown at Emsworth Museum in April 2014\, but since then there are some additional panels that explore some of the 30 books written by Westerman about the First World War; many written and published while the conflict was still being fought. \n\n\n\nDuring the 1930’s Percy F. Westerman was voted Britain’s most popular children’s writer in a national poll organised through public libraries and was featured in a Pathé Newsreel film and shown in cinemas.  By the time of his death in 1959 he had written more than 170 books and numerous short stories and serials for magazines that included The Boy’s Own Paper and The Scout.   One of the features of the Ripping Yarns exhibition is the range and scope of the cover and dust wrapper illustrations designed to attract generations of young readers to pick the books off the shelves. Famous artists including Terrance Cuneo and Rowland Hilder were among more than 60 artists/illustrators whose work helped to bring Westerman’s words to life.  The exhibition curator\, Nigel Gossop of the Westerman Yarns will be in attendance during the opening morning and will happy to meet and discuss any aspect of the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Demonstration - Rope Making
DESCRIPTION:Members of Emsworth Museum demonstrate rope making using a rope walk.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRope making was a thriving industry in Emsworth for more than 200 years. Christopher Day is recorded as having a rope making business here in 1714. The manufacture of cordage was a profitable concern in the days of wooden ships and sail but sadly no industrial rope making exists in the town today. The industry dwindled in the period between the two world wars. Before he died Bob Lewis\, son of John Lewis of Carter Sons and Lewis\, gifted a rope making jack to the museum and over the winter of 2021/2022 Trevor Davies\, helped by the staff at Bridport Museum\, designed a small rope making walk for Emsworth Museum. Although on a very small scale it is an indication of how the 200 metres Emsworth rope walk that ran parallel to the Slipper Millpond from the Sussex Brewery pub to the Slipper Mill would have looked.Rope making Demonstrations will be at the following times: \n\n\n\n\nSaturday July 29th: 11:00 AM; 12:00 AM; 1:00 PM; 2:00 PM; 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM\n\n\n\nSunday July 30th: 2:00 PM; 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM\n\n\n\n\nThe rope making demonstrations that were held during the weekend of 2nd/3rd July 2022 were very successful and are being repeated on 29th/30th July this year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Coastal Archaeology (Archaeology on the Coastal Plain)
DESCRIPTION:The increasingly extreme weather is eroding our coastline revealing features of historic interest which are then swept away. Chichester and District Archaeology Society runs regular monitoring programmes to record these changes. This exhibition looks at some of the revealed features (Bronze Age to Tudor) as well as outcomes from other projects that CDAS has undertaken on the coastal plain. The Roman Villa at Warblington continues to have its own cabinet in the Main Room of Emsworth Museum. Photo caption: Wooden structure\, possibly a fish trap\, exposed at Medmerry

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Brickmaking in Emsworth and the Local Area
DESCRIPTION:Brickmaking in EmsworthBefore the widespread use of the internal combustion engine brick making was a localised activity. Seams of clay suitable for making bricks run through Emsworth\, Rowlands Castle and Hayling Island and they have been exploited since the Roman period. Often brick making was seasonal and incorporated into the annual farming cycle. This exhibition explains the traditional brick making process using photographs from the Pycroft brick making business on Hayling Island. The source of the bricks used to construct the Museum building is identified.Dates:April 1st\, 2nd\, 7th\, 8th\, 9th\, 10th\, 15th\, 16thMay 6th\, 7th\, 8th\, 13th\, 14th\, 20th\, 21st
