SUMMARY:Demonstration - Rope Making
DESCRIPTION:Members of Emsworth Museum demonstrate rope making using a rope walk.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRope making was a thriving industry in Emsworth for more than 200 years. Christopher Day is recorded as having a rope making business here in 1714. The manufacture of cordage was a profitable concern in the days of wooden ships and sail but sadly no industrial rope making exists in the town today. The industry dwindled in the period between the two world wars.Before he died Bob Lewis\, son of John Lewis of Carter Sons and Lewis\, gifted a rope making jack to the museum and over the winter of 2021/2022 Trevor Davies\, helped by the staff at Bridport Museum\, designed a small rope making walk for Emsworth Museum. Although on a very small scale it is an indication of how the 200 metres Emsworth rope walk that ran parallel to the Slipper Millpond from the Sussex Brewery pub to the Slipper Mill would have looked.Rope making Demonstrations will be at the following times: \n\n\n\n\nSaturday July 29th: 11:00 AM; 12:00 AM; 1:00 PM; 2:00 PM; 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM\n\n\n\nSunday July 30th: 2:00 PM; 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM\n\n\n\n\nThe rope making demonstrations that were held during the weekend of 2nd/3rd July 2022 were very successful and are being repeated on 29th/30th July this year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Extreme Weather (1963 and 1987)

SUMMARY:Treasure Hunt
DESCRIPTION:After a break of several years\, due principally to the pandemic\, the annual Treasure Hunt will return on Wednesday 21st June 2023\, starting around 7.00pm. Teams of 1-4 pedestrians will follow a route round Emsworth\, guided by written instructions. There will be a number of questions to be answered on the way. The winning team will be awarded with a modest prize and asked to compile the route and questions for next year (but not obligatory). Open to all families\, groups\, couples and individuals (who must have a unique team name!) There will be refreshments. \n\n\n\nPlease bring £5 cash per person; concessions for young teams (guides\, scouts\, etc.)

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Coastal Archaeology (Archaeology on the Coastal Plain)
DESCRIPTION:The increasingly extreme weather is eroding our coastline revealing features of historic interest which are then swept away. Chichester and District Archaeology Society runs regular monitoring programmes to record these changes. This exhibition looks at some of the revealed features (Bronze Age to Tudor) as well as outcomes from other projects that CDAS has undertaken on the coastal plain. DESCRIPTION:An illustrated talk by Andrew Negus \n\n\n\nThe Portsmouth talk is in four parts\, and covers the origin and development of the settlement from 1100 until today. Naturally its history is closely related to the growth of the Royal Navy and the Navy’s part in making the UK the most powerful country in the world by 1900. The talks introduce us to some of the many characters who have been involved in Portsmouth’s history including murderers\, harlots\, and the inventor of the umbrella. Kings\, queens\, admirals\, authors\, and actors will entertain us with their appearances. Part 1 Portsmouth 1100-1800. \n\n\n\nHarlots Dung and Glory\n\n\n\nTickets: You must book a ticket in advance to be sure of entry. SUMMARY:Emsworth Arts Trail
DESCRIPTION:Ben Timmis will be displaying his photographs during all 5 days of the Art Trail: April 22nd\, 23rd\, 29th 30th\, and May 1stHe originally spent 4 months in a professional darkroom learning traditional photographic development and enlarging techniques before turning to digital photography in 2003.He is a semi-retired Consultant Radiologist and has been taking photographs for the past 60 years – now mainly around Emsworth where he lives with his wife Sue and dog Daisy. His photograph entitled “Isolated Together” was chosen by the National Portrait Gallery as one of the final 100 (out of over 31\,000 submitted) to represent Britain during the pandemic in a project called ‘Hold Still’. His photograph was included in a book commemorating the event and on an advertising board outside Waterloo Station in London. He was awarded Licentiate of The Royal Photographic Society in 2022.

SUMMARY:Exhibition - Brickmaking in Emsworth and the Local Area
DESCRIPTION:Brickmaking in EmsworthBefore the widespread use of the internal combustion engine brick making was a localised activity. Seams of clay suitable for making bricks run through Emsworth\, Rowlands Castle and Hayling Island and they have been exploited since the Roman period. Often brick making was seasonal and incorporated into the annual farming cycle. This exhibition explains the traditional brick making process using photographs from the Pycroft brick making business on Hayling Island.
