Talk – Portsmouth – Harlots, Dung and Glory, Part II

May 2, 2024 @ 7:30 PM 9:00 PM

Portsmouth Harbour
Portsmouth Harbour

Andrew Negus is back by popular demand to give the second part of the Portsmouth story – not that you need to have heard the first one to appreciate Part II covering Portsmouth 1750 to 1850.

We shall see how two Napoleons force the creation of world class defences around Portsmouth and force the Dockyard to become the greatest factory in history.  The Press Gang, Nelson, a gentle cobbler, and an actress of mighty repute will tell their stories.  Australia will be founded by rascals, two new towns appear, and many poorer folks disappear as Britain gains the largest empire in history.

Andrew Negus

Andrew is a retired history teacher, an around the world backpacker (twice), a Blue Badge guide for central southern England, and a popular local historian who is always in demand. A very entertaining speaker who will take you on a whirlwind journey through history with his own enthralling, unique spin on historical storytelling.

Tickets: You must book a ticket in advance to be sure of entry. Tickets are available for £5 each cash only and only from Bookends, 7 High Street, Emsworth, PO10 7AQ. Seats are unreserved.
