Spirit iron

Description

Comprises a heavy steel body with two rows of holes one above the other. At the rear of the base is a small cylinder to hold the spirit. On top of the base is a flat plate bolted to the base for a wooden handle. It was heated by an iron element connected to the small spirit containing cylindrical container fitted at the back. This type of iron first appeared in the 1850s and used methylated spirit or alcohol as fuel and often used by travellers. 18 cm x 16 cm x 6 cm
